Urban Agriculture

Urban Agriculture refers to growing crops such as vegetables and fruits in the urban areas. In Kawasaki and Tokyo, as few of the largest cities in Japan, many farmers are operating agriculture taking advantage of the characteristics of the region on relatively small farm lands located in residential areas.

Urban Agriculture helps to strengthen bonds of the communities and contributes to the inheritance of local food culture and the preservation of the natural environment. However, Urban Agriculture has certain limitations, as it requires consideration on limited land use and the impact on the surrounding environment. Additionally, there are challenges and concerns unique to Japan's Urban Agriculture, such as maintaining farmland, the aging of farmers, lack of successors to the existing farmers, and the management of agriculture in a limited space. In order to overcome these challenges and produce sustainable Urban Agriculture, urban farmers in those cities are devising new approaches every day.
