Reinvent Perseverance: From a supply vessel to a key player in the Polar POD mission

Are you ready to take part in an innovative project with a tangible impact on the marine environment? The Perseverance vessel, a key player in the Polar POD expedition, extends far beyond its role as a supply vessel. Help shape its unique identity by exploring its potential to support the Polar POD program and contribute to the scientific challenge through the collection and sharing of open data. In doing so, consider how your ideas can contribute to the long-term sustainability of the project, whether through existing resources, complementary funding, or by envisioning potential financing paths for early-stage concepts.

What if you were the missing piece of the puzzle?

Since July 2023, PERSEVERANCE has embarked on preliminary measurement campaigns, crisscrossing polar waters and thus refining the scientific program of the Polar POD expedition. This one-of-a-kind sailboat plays an essential role in research into ocean-atmosphere exchanges in the polar regions, contributing to the understanding of the global climate.

PERSEVERANCE makes it possible to continuously collect data during navigation on heat and carbon dioxide exchanges at the ocean-atmosphere interface, biogeochemical characteristics and the dynamics of the water masses crossed. These data will complement those collected by the Polar POD drifting in the circum-Antarctic Current and will thus contribute to improving our climate models and our understanding of ongoing changes, particularly on the carbon cycle in the Southern Ocean...

How would the exploration of the Southern Ocean provide a clearer vision of the interactions between sea, atmosphere, biodiversity and human activities? Would it be possible to achieve all this in an extreme environment while minimizing the ecological impact?

The winning team will enter into a partnership agreement with the Polar POD program to develop their solution, with a primary focus on supporting the Perseverance vessel's mission.

This partnership will include expert guidance (mentorship by Jean-Louis Étienne and the Polar POD team) to bring the winning concept to life.

In addition : Potential opportunities for immersion experiences aboard the Perseverance vessel for hands-on development and testing.
