CBC / Radio-Canada's 2019 Hackathon ran from February 1 to 3, simultaneously in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver

CBC/Radio-Canada’s Hackathon 2019 was a collaborative event that took place in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and online across the country. Over the course of a weekend, sixteen teams tackled the topic of personalization, exploring new ideas, developing their skills and sharing their talents with Canada’s national public broadcaster.

A special shout out to team True North - composed of Brad Poulter, Megan Cooper and David Wasylciw - who travelled from Yellowknife, YK to Toronto and took home the top honours: the CEO’s Outstanding Award, presented by CBC/Radio-Canada’s Chief Executive Officer Catherine Tait. Each team member received a bursary of $2,000. Their project is meant to facilitate connecting communities across the North, who speak up to 18 different official languages, by making it easier to find radio content related to different local regions and topics.

Our other award recipients are:

Greater Toronto Area team DysonSphere from the University of Waterloo (Angela Krone, Jonathan Smith, Charlotte Baker, Zi Kai Chen, and Margie McCloskey) was awarded the CBC Digital Products Award for their prototype that proposes personalization by contextualization while ensuring to avoid creating filter bubbles.

Greater Toronto Area team
Crimson Solutions (Grace Ma - University of Waterloo, Welson Wei - Western University, Frank Liu - Ryerson University, Haoyang Ding - University of Toronto and Steven Jung - Ryerson University) was awarded the Amazon Web Services Student Award. Team members will be participating in a two-day workshop offered by Amazon to continue developing their project while making the best use of their cloud services.

Montreal team Low Five (Jonathan Rochette, Guillaume Simard, Joël Auchu, William Fortin et Vincent Bélanger) was awarded the Radio-Canada Médias Numériques Award  for their personaziable interface that would engage Canadians beyond traditional platforms.
